How are crowns and bridges different?

Crowns and bridges are dental restorations that repair or restore damaged, decaying, or missing teeth. Though similar, crowns and bridges have different functions.

Crowns

Bridges

A bridge is a dental restoration that fills a gap in your smile where a permanent tooth used to be.

Crowns

First, your Belmont Dental provider reviews your dental records, takes digital X-rays, and completes an oral exam. If you have a damaged or severely decaying tooth, your provider prepares it for a dental crown. They administer a local anesthetic and remove the compromised tooth enamel. 

Then, your provider takes digital impressions of your tooth and sends them to a dental lab. The lab designs and creates a custom dental crown. When the crown is finished, you return to Belmont Dental and your provider bonds it over your tooth.

Bridges

The Belmont Dental team prescribes a bridge if you’ve lost a permanent tooth.

Your provider completes an oral exam and takes digital X-rays. Then, they carefully remove a thin layer of enamel from the teeth on either side of the gap in your smile. 

Your provider takes digital impressions of your prepared teeth and sends them to a dental lab. The lab designs and creates a custom dental bridge. When it’s finished, you return to Belmont Dental and your provider bonds it in place.
